Prepare to get sick of my face. I’m learning how to talk to a camera, and I’m bringing you along for the ride.

Why this skill matters?

In 2025, video is everywhere. It’s the dominant form of content online, and if you’re comfortable on camera, you unlock massive opportunities. Speaking gigs, job offers, collaborations—all are more accessible if you can confidently present yourself on video. Whether you’re pitching ideas, leading presentations, running meetings, or simply explaining something in a video message, knowing how to talk to a camera is a game-changer.

And yet… no one really teaches you how to do it.

Since COVID, we’ve all had to get used to talking to a lens—Zoom calls, recorded presentations, and virtual meetings have become the norm. But actual training on how to engage effectively through a camera? That’s still rare. Whether it’s for professional use, content creation, or just better communication, mastering this skill makes a huge difference.

Why I am learning this skill

For me, this isn’t about chasing trends or trying to go viral. It’s about breaking down a personal barrier, building a stronger personal brand, and being open about the process. Video is the most powerful way to connect online, yet I’ve been holding myself back from using it the way I want to.

Removing a roadblock

Right now, my hesitation with video is holding me back from using platforms the way I want to. There are ideas I want to share and conversations I want to start, but my reluctance to appear on camera is limiting how I engage. Text and graphics are great, but they don’t have the same impact as direct, face-to-face communication.

Level 1: Getting comfortable talking to a lens

📌 Task: Record yourself talking to a camera about something you care about.

📝 Action: Start simple by introducing a topic you’re passionate about. There is no direct script, no audience and no pressure to post. Simply get comfortable talking to a lens.

Outcome: Building confidence in speaking to a lens and becoming more comfortable with the learning curve.

🌱 Example: I'm going to introduce the Skill Lab on my social media as my first challenge. I'll lean my phone against my monitors, stack it up on books, get some lighting from the monitors, and hit record.
